Calculation of Your Retirement Benefit
The Basic Benefit portion of FERS is based on your Average High-3 salary and Length of Service including unused sick leave.
The Average High-3 salary includes regular and locality pay. It will also include environmental differential, premium for standby time, law enforcement availability, night differential (Federal Wage System) paid to those in certain positions. One way to know if it is included, is it too is subject to retirement contributions. For most, the salary for the last three years prior to retirement is used to calculate it. However, it will be based on whenever you had the highest 36 months consecutive salary.
The Length of Service is all your cumulative creditable service converted to years, months, and days. The unused sick leave is converted to years, months, and days and added together for purposes of calculation. Formula for the Unreduced Gross Annuity:
